QR Code on a business card: how to create a vCard

23 October 2026 · 5 min read

A QR Code on a business card does what a paper card cannot: whoever scans it gets your contact details already on their phone, with no need to copy numbers and addresses. The type of QR Code you need is called a vCard, after the standard contact format that iPhone and Android understand on their own.

In this guide you will see how to create it, which data to put in it, how to choose between the fixed and the updatable version, and how to print it so that it always scans.

Two ways to make a QR Code for a business card

Static vCard: the contact is inside the code

Your details are written in the pattern. Whoever scans the code sees the contact card and saves it to the address book with a tap.

  • It works forever and depends on no service.
  • It cannot be edited: if you change number or role, the printed code stays the old one.
  • The more fields you add, the denser the pattern becomes and the harder to read on a small card.

Dynamic vCard: a profile page you can update

The code contains a short address that opens a page with your details and your links. You can change the page whenever you like, even after printing the cards.

  • You update phone, role, website and social profiles without reprinting.
  • The pattern stays simple, so it scans better.
  • You see how many times the code is scanned.
  • It depends on the service: the code works as long as the account is active.

If you print many cards, or if your role and contact details may change, choose the dynamic version. If it is a few cards and the details are the same as always, the static one is enough. To understand the difference better, see the guide Static vs dynamic QR Codes.

Which data to include

The card is small and attention is short: include what is needed to get you called back.

  • First and last name, and if needed the role and the company.
  • One phone number (the one you really want to be called on) and one email.
  • The website, if you have one.
  • Professional social profiles (for example LinkedIn), if you use them for work.
  • The address only if clients come to you.

Mind your privacy: the data in a static vCard is readable by anyone who scans the code, even a stranger who photographs it on a table. Use professional contact details, not your personal mobile or your home address.

How to create the vCard QR Code, step by step

  1. Open the vCard QR Code generator.
  2. Fill in the fields: name, role, company, phone, email, website and social profiles.
  3. Choose the style: your brand colors or black on white. Contrast matters more than looks.
  4. Download the code as SVG or high-resolution PNG, both suitable for printing.
  5. Test it with an iPhone and an Android before sending the cards to the printer: it should offer to save the contact with the right details.

How to print it on the card

  • Size: at least 2 × 2 cm. On the back of a standard card a 2.5 cm code fits well.
  • Contrast and margin: dark code on a light background, with white space all around it and no text touching it.
  • Materials and finishes: matte paper. Avoid foils, hot stamping or embossing on the code: reflections make it unreadable.
  • A line next to it: “Save my contact” or “Scan to save me to your contacts”. Many people do not know the camera is enough.
  • Print test: print one sample and scan it with two different phones before ordering copies.

Where else to use the same QR Code

  • In your email signature and on presentations.
  • On a roll-up banner or at your stand at a trade fair.
  • On a shop window or company vehicle, for people who want the number without copying it.

The most common mistakes

  • Putting too many fields in a static vCard: the code becomes unreadable at 2 cm.
  • Printing the code too small or on a glossy finish.
  • Entering a personal mobile and then changing it with no way to update the code.
  • Not testing the printed card with a phone other than your own.

What if you want more than a contact?

If you need a page with several links, a “Save contact” button and your social profiles, there is DenQr Page: a page you connect to your QR Code, ready in a few minutes.

Frequently asked questions

  • No. iPhones and Android phones read it with the camera and offer to save the contact to the address book.

  • Only with a dynamic vCard, which opens a profile page you can update. In a static vCard the data is written inside the pattern and cannot be changed.

  • At least 2 × 2 cm, with a white margin around it, good contrast and matte paper. Always test a printed sample before ordering.

  • In a static vCard, anyone who scans the code. So use professional contact details and not personal data such as your home address.

  • With the dynamic vCard, yes: from the dashboard you see scans over time. With the static one nothing can be counted.
